To your problem, what about your routes and firewall rules? What does tcpdump say? It doesn't look like a problem of the NAT code, after all it works one way, and for the code it's no difference that the packet goes into the otehr direction now... especially since you didn't use '-b' (bidirectional rules) and the log ('-o') says NAT did its part of the job.

What else did you use then?
Going from 2.0 to 2.2 kernels is quite a big step.
